 One of the common pieces of shorthand  

 in the comms world is the "smiley".    

 If you look at :-) sideways, you'll see

 it's a smiling face: it's used to      

 indicate a "joking" statement; the user

 doesn't want to be taken TOO seriously.

 ;-) is a "winking" Smiley: more of a   

     "don't hit me for what I just said"

 :-> is a "grin": the user has just made

     a really biting sarcastic remark.
